So I was off visiting family in the posh Bloomfield Hills, Michigan when it occurred to me… big houses = big purses = horses = tack stores! So I of course googled the closest tack store and found Sporthorse Saddlery in the nearby town of New Hudson. I borrowed my aunt’s car and ventured into the Michigan countryside and I must say it was worth the 25 minute drive and getting lost on the away home!
Sporthorse Saddlery is a tidy, well-kept tack store with a sophisticated decor and surprisingly good selection of dressage items. The staff was lovely and were patient as I tried on breeches after breeches. My wish list included the Thornhill Chafeless Padded Breakaway Halter and at least two saddle pads… but sadly I had to limit purchases to clothes for two reasons: I flew down and it’s difficult to hide halters and saddle pads from my travel companion – my mother. But I’m sure I’ll be back to pick up the rest.
The Thornhill halter for just $31.95 had this lovely padding on the crown which is rare for breakaways… Salut is accident prone, so he can only wear leather or breakaways. He should wear bubble wrap too but I haven’t found any in his size… The saddle pad collection was envious with not just black and white but COLOUR and displayed so that you could easily browse through them.
As for breeches… it seems that my tush, Romfh and my credit card go quite well together. The winners were the Miss Romfh Denim’s ($109 USD) and Romfh International’s in Dark Pearl ($129.95 USD). I fell in love with the pocket detailing on the denim’s and the dark pearl seemed like a nice neutral colour for everyday riding. Both breeches are much lighter weight than my Pikeur’s so are great for hot days. They also don’t have the annoying low rise of some brands in the same price range, low-rise never stay where they should when tacking up. For the sake of those in search of opaque WHITE breeches, I can now confirm that the Romfh Sarafino Breech with gray full seat were a safe bet – they didn’t have my exact size so they didn’t make the list. However I must say I love the idea of the white with a contrast seat. After trying these on I prefer white/black … the gray will still show saddle marks, was much lighter than the photo shows and weren’t very slimming (a key consideration when wearing skin tight white pants). I was devastated (ok I’m being a tad dramatic) when I discovered these beautiful gray USG breeches with lime green stitching that were sold out in my size… oh well maybe next time.
Towards the end of my shopping trip I started to feel a little guilty when I realized I wasn’t bringing anything for Salut… so I picked him up a Gummy Mitt with “massaging effect”. That will have to do for now.
